A client of mine constantly kept herself in the shadows, not confident enough to speak out, at work or at home. She avoided social interactions, as making conversation was an uphill struggle, finding this so awkward and uncomfortable that she would stress over it for days.

It felt easier to her to withdraw from the world, to stay alone. Being isolated in this way though caused her to feel the same anxiety but with a different cause, she needed the interaction with others, as we all do. She became depressed, felt that life was just a struggle and she couldn’t cope.
